The Practical Test
As you progress through your driving lessons and your skills increase to test standard, you will feel more confident as a driver – and your lessons will become much easier.
When to Book Your Practical Test
⚠️ Important: Your designated driving instructor will advise you when they think you are ready to sit your driving test. Do not book your driving test without consulting your driving instructor first – they may already have a pre-booked test.
How to Book
-
Online – via the DVSA website
-
By phone – 0300 200 1122
Please note: All test fees are payable to the DVSA at the time of booking.
Driving Test Day Preparation
It is very common, advised, and standard driving practice to have a one-hour driving lesson immediately before your practical driving test.
This allows you to:
-
Go over any areas you are least confident about
-
Ask your driving instructor any last-minute questions
-
Feel more relaxed behind the wheel before arriving at the test centre
We will agree on the cost of the pre-test driving lesson and the use of the driving school car during your test beforehand. This will be paid to your driving instructor on the day of your test (unless you have already pre-paid).
What Happens During Your Practical Test
The practical driving test will last approximately 45 minutes and will be conducted by a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) examiner.
The Test Format:
| Stage | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Eyesight check | Standard eyesight check at the start |
| 2. Vehicle safety questions | You’ll be asked two ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ questions |
| 3. Practical driving skills | Includes at least one manoeuvre and possibly an emergency stop |
| 4. Independent driving | Approximately 20 minutes following verbal directions, sat nav, and/or signposts |
