What is the Automatic Driving License?
When you undertake automatic driving lessons it allows you to qualify with an automatic driving license. By having an automatic license you are permitted to driving automatic cars however, this restricts you by not allowing you to drive manual cars. Whereas, with a manual license you have the permission to drive both manual and automatic cars without having to do any further tests!
Don’t worry! If you pass your driving test with an automatic license you can still decide to gain a manual license if you wish to. All you have to do is follow three simple rules stipulated by the DVSA:
- A qualified manual driver who is over the age of 21 and has held their manual driving license for at least 3 years
- Those ‘L’ plates from your automatic driving lesson days they will need to be back on!
- You must be insured on the car you are driving
If you do decide to switch to a manual driving license after passing an automatic driving test in Colchester, Clacton- On- Sea or Ipswich you will not have to redo your theory test again however, you will have to retake your practical test (manual of course). The overall test is exactly the same! Same maneuverers, same routes the only difference is gear shifts and clutch control!
Why choose automatic?
An automatic car will change the gears for you and all you have to do is increase the speed with the accelerator or decrease it with the brake pedal. Whereas in a manual car these gear changes have to be done by you using the gear stick and the clutch pedal.
Advantages:
- The driving industry is changing! Manual cars on average are still more popular in the UK than automatic cars however, the gap has been decreasing. Not to mention some manufacturers are making certain car lines only in automatic now and electric cars are all automatic!
- By allowing the car to change the gears seamlessly for you, results in a shorter time to pass as you will not need to spend time figuring out clutch control and gear changes
- Hill starts can be scary! However, with an automatic car the car does the hard part and insures you don’t roll back
- Your left foot will not cry in pain when it is rush hour or times of busy traffic. This is because you will not have to constantly change gears from 1 to 2 every few seconds due to start stop traffic conditions! Isn’t that handy?
- Stalling! Stalling can result in a minor or a serious fault (depending on the situation) in a manual driving test Thankfully, with an automatic car there is absolutely no risk of stalling unless there is a mechanical fault with the car
Disadvantages:
- Price per driving lesson can be slightly more expensive, this is due to demand and supply as there are less automatic driving instructors for the students
- Automatic cars are more costly. To buy, to maintain and to repair as they have certain components which can be difficult to deal with compared to manual cars
- They do not provide the same level of control as a manual car can. As they cannot effectively predict upcoming situations such as a steep hill where a lower gear may be more suitable
- As said before automatic driving license is more restrictive as it does not allow you to drive manual cars in comparison to a manual license which allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars
- Some companies provide company cars however they may only have manual cars to offer therefore, they may have a prerequisite that you must have a manual driving license
Who are the benefactors of an automatic driving license?
As the driving industry progresses it will eventually become more rare to see manual cars therefore more and more people in the long run. People with joint issues, who prefer a easier drive would also benefit. Those who want a closer connection to the road and a more exhilarating driving experience would benefit from a manual driving license. Not to mention car fanatics generally would want a manual license to be able to pick and choose what they drive.
With the condition of the Colchester roads currently due to road works until 2020 the traffic conditions have become severe! Therefore, an automatic car would be more beneficial. This is the case with any busy city/ town as rush hour traffic is a pain!
However, with a manual license you have complete freedom in what car you wish to use and in other countries it is cheaper to hire a manual car compared to an automatic one as availability of automatic cars is generally lower.
Overall, the choice is down to you! What driving license caters to your needs and what do you think will be the best suit for you!
The most important question… COST!
Driving lessons in automatic cars to get an automatic driving license is generally more expensive compared to manual lessons. This is offset however, as on average it takes less time to learn and pass your driving test in an automatic car.
