Are Intensive Driving Courses Worth It? An Honest Opinion From a Colchester Driving Instructor
I get asked this question all the time.
“Mas, are intensive driving courses actually worth the money?”
The short answer is yes. But only if you are the right kind of learner.
Let me explain.
What Actually Is an Intensive Driving Course?
First things first. An intensive driving course is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of taking one or two hours of lessons per week for several months, you cram your lessons into a much shorter period. Sometimes one week. Sometimes two weeks. Sometimes spread out over a month.
You might do four hours a day. Or six hours. Or even eight hours if you are really keen.
The idea is to get you from beginner to test-ready as quickly as possible.
And for the right person, it works brilliantly.
Who Should Take an Intensive Course?
I have taught a lot of students on intensive courses over the years. The ones who succeed are usually in one of these situations.
You need to pass quickly for a job. I have had students who landed a job that required a driving licence. They needed to pass in weeks, not months. Intensive courses were perfect for them.
You have a deadline coming up. Maybe you are going to university soon. Maybe you are moving away. Maybe your theory test is about to expire. When the clock is ticking, an intensive course makes sense.
You struggle with weekly lessons. Some people forget everything between weekly lessons. They spend the first fifteen minutes of every lesson just remembering what they did last time. That is wasted time and wasted money. Intensive courses solve that problem because you are constantly building on what you just learned.
You are a quick learner. Some people just pick things up faster than others. If you are coordinated, confident, and focused, you do not need forty hours spread over six months. You might only need twenty hours over two weeks.
Who Should NOT Take an Intensive Course?
I have to be honest with you. Intensive courses are not for everyone.
If you are a nervous driver, cramming hours of lessons into a few days might actually make things worse. You need time to process, relax, and let things sink in. Weekly lessons are probably better for you.
If you have a busy schedule and cannot commit to full days of driving, an intensive course will just stress you out. You are better off with standard weekly lessons.
If you are a complete beginner who has never sat in the driver’s seat before, jumping straight into an intensive course can be overwhelming. I usually recommend a few standard lessons first to see how you cope.
Manual vs Automatic – Which One for an Intensive Course?
This is a big decision, so let me break it down for you.
Manual Intensive Driving Courses
Learning manual takes longer. There is no way around it. You have to master the clutch, the gears, and the coordination between your hands and feet. That takes time and practice.
But here is the upside. If you pass in a manual car, you can drive both manual and automatic vehicles for the rest of your life. You are not restricted.
For an intensive course, manual is absolutely doable. But you need to be realistic. Most people need more hours in a manual than an automatic. A 30 or 40 hour intensive course is more common for manual learners.
I have taught plenty of students who passed manual in one or two weeks. But they worked hard. Really hard.
Automatic Intensive Driving Courses
Automatic is simpler. No clutch. No stalling. No worrying about finding the right gear. You just steer, accelerate, and brake.
That simplicity means you can progress much faster. A 16 or 20 hour intensive course is often enough for a beginner in an automatic, especially if you pick things up quickly.
I have had students pass their automatic test in just one week. Five days of lessons and then the test on Friday. It happens.
The downside? If you pass in an automatic, you can only drive automatic cars. That is fine for most people these days – more and more cars are automatic anyway. But it is something to think about.
What About the Cost?
Let me be upfront. Intensive driving courses cost more upfront than paying for weekly lessons.
You are paying for a block of hours – sometimes twenty, thirty, or forty hours all at once. That can feel like a lot of money.
But here is what you need to consider.
With weekly lessons, you might end up needing more hours because you forget things between lessons. You might need extra lessons to brush up before your test. You might have to pay for more test bookings if you fail.
With an intensive course, everything is fresh in your mind. You are constantly improving. Most of my intensive students pass in fewer total hours than weekly learners.
So yes, you pay more upfront. But you might actually spend less overall.
What About the Test?
This is really important.
Do not book your practical test before you start your intensive course. Wait until your instructor tells you are ready.
I have had students book their test for the Friday of their intensive week, assuming they will be ready. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are not. And if you are not ready, you lose your test fee.
Let your instructor guide you. We will book the test when the time is right.
A Real Story From Colchester
I had a student last year. Young lad, needed to pass quickly because he had a job offer that started in six weeks. He had never driven before.
We did a manual intensive course. Thirty hours spread over three weeks. He worked his backside off. Some days he was exhausted. But he kept going.
On week four, he passed his test first time. Started his job on time. Sent me a message thanking me and telling me he would not have done it without the intensive course.
That is why I believe in them. When they work, they really work.
The Bottom Line
So, are intensive driving courses worth it?
Yes – if you are the right type of learner.
You need to be focused, committed, and able to handle several hours of driving each day. You need a clear deadline or a strong reason to pass quickly. And you need to choose the right transmission for your ability – manual if you want full freedom, automatic if you want to pass faster.
If that sounds like you, an intensive course could be the best decision you make.
If you are nervous, busy, or just want to learn at a relaxed pace, stick with weekly lessons. There is nothing wrong with that at all.
